Making an entrance

Port of Brisbane News, 01/11/2006

If you've been out to the Port of Brisbane lately you might have noticed something different on your way in. The entrance to the port is now marked by a specially designed 'entry statement', installed by the Port of Brisbane Corporation in late August.

It features four individual columns with a glavanised steel frame; two of the columns are clad with pre-rusted steel and two are clad with compressed cement sheeting. The logo and lettering were made from fabricated and welded aluminium, and the structure is secured with 1.2m-deep reinforced conrete footings.

The columns are bolted to the footings, and can be removed and relocated as needed. At night a series of strip lights illuminate the logo and 'up lights' illuminate the columns. The 'hardscaping' around the structure, which also forms a protective barrier against mowing damage, incorporates recycled pavers and recycled crushed concrete.

The figure was designed by ML Design and fabricated by local business Urban Art Projects who have a large facility at Eagle Farm. Both of these companies have extensive experience in entry statement and artistic feature design for new estates and city buildings, parks and urban-renewal projects.
