Magnetic Island Ferry Terminal
Magnetic Island Townsville AustraliaClient: Nelly Bay Harbour Pty Ltd
Status: Completed & Constructed
Disciplines: Architecture
Market Sectors: Civic & Cultural
The ferry terminal at Nelly Bay on Magnetic Island is the new point of entry to this island in the Coral Sea off the coast of Townsville. The building has been developed by the Nelly Bay Harbour Pty Ltd for the Queensland Department of State Development and Queensland Transport and represents the first stage in a multiple precinct development in Nelly Bay.
An adjoining car park accommodating 212 vehicles has been created which is shared with future commercial development of the site. The building provides both enclosed and covered arrival and departure space with adjoining ablution facilities and retail kiosks. A total of 300m2 is enclosed whilst 600m2 is covered as outdoor waiting area.
The dynamic form of the building with its striking folded roof and exposed structural frame provides a landmark building for arriving and departing visitors. The folded roof opens up to both the waterfront and inland vistas with lower overlapping awnings protecting exterior spaces from the heat of the sun and the inclemency of a tropical environment. The selection of materials and finishes are sympathetic to the waterfront location yet resistant to the aggressiveness of the exposure.
The internal spaces are lofty with high level glazing allowing the perception of the ceiling floating over. The internal floor is finished in layers of coloured epoxy resin creating the character of the surrounding ocean. Local artwork has been installed to reflect the mood, history and activities available on the island.
