University Of Queensland GPN4 Building

St Lucia Campus Brisbane, Queensland Australia
Client: University Of Queensland
Status: Completed & Constructed
Disciplines: Architecture
Market Sectors: Educational

ML Design in association with RKA, were the successful architects in a shortlisted design competition for the General Purpose North Building 4. The 10,000m2 building over six levels contains a wide range of teaching spaces including: Staff offices, student resource areas, a 250m2 auditorium, and a multipurpose space that opens out onto a landscaped roof terrace.

This prominent contemporary building is located overlooking the main forecourt of the University, responding to its site by addressing its largely landscaped setting and surrounding buildings. The building is successful on many levels: by the way in which it engages with the campus master plan, by the provision of a new unique building typology with significant ESD features, and by the carefully considered building functionalities, adjacencies and ground plane interface. Glazed features allow a considered transparent display of the building’s activities by onlookers, and enables occupants to enjoy outlook opportunities, including distant views to West End & the mountain ranges beyond.
